Educator Olato Sam shot dead by stray bullet

FIFTY THREE YEAR OLD Olato Sam of 2811 Youth Place South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown was shot and killed just around 00:30 Hrs on Friday morning, August 04, 2023.

Sam, the Former Chief Education Officer who up to the time of his death served as an advisor to the Education Minister, met his demise while in the vicinity of the Gold Rush Bar at Plaisance Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.

BIG Smith News Watch was informed that shortly before the incident, Sam went to the Gold Rush Bar where he met three friends of his and they began to socialise.

A fight broke out between two males on the opposite side of the bar and two loud explosions suspected to be gunshots were heard, immediately after that, Sam was seen crumpling to the ground.

He was picked up by one his friends and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The body was examined and what appears to be a gun shot wound was seen to the upper left side chest.

This publication was able to confirm that the two males who were involved in the fight were both arrested and are in police custody.

They have been identified as a 28 year old self-employed of Victoria Road Plaisance and a 29 year old Landscaper of Prince Williams Street Plaisance.

The investigations are ongoing and their hands are expected to be swabbed for gun powder residue.
