A Corentyne man who opted to plead guilty to manslaughter for his wife’s murder in 2017, has been sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment by Justice Navindra Singh.

Raywatram Mooloo, called ‘Adesh’, and ‘Cow Curry,’ 31, of Lot 36 Number 58 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, admitted that he killed his reputed wife, Gomattie Ramsingh also known as “Fazeela” between May 25 and 26, 2017.

The prosecution’s facts revealed that Mooloo wanted money to buy rum and as such went into his then 34-year-old reputed wife’s purse and took out some cash.

This caused Ramsingh to hold onto him and a fight ensued between them. Mooloo held onto the woman’s head and knocked it thrice on the verandah after which he pulled her off the steps, causing her to tumble several times down the stairway.

He then picked up his spouse and soaked her head in water before leaving to buy Vodka. Upon his return, he and his wife got into another argument about another woman.

Mooloo’s wife began chucking him, but he pushed her back, resulting in her falling off the stairs and onto two concreate blocks that were in their yard.

Mooloo and another person then assisted his wife into bed. On May 26, 2017, however, she was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident occurred at the couple’s Number 58 Village, Corentyne, Berbice home.

Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh, give Ramsingh’s cause of death as multiple injuries: blunt force trauma to the head with cerebral haemorrhage, fractured spine, fractured breastbone with haemothora and retro-peritoneal haemorrhage.

In the end, Justice Singh, presiding at the High Court in Berbice, sentenced the confessed killer to serve 16 years in prison.

From this figure, the Judge, however, ordered the prison authority to deduct about five years—which reflects the time Mooloo spent in pre-trial detention. This means the wife killer will have to do approximately 11 more years in jail.

Representing the prosecution was State Counsel Nafeeza Baig, while Mooloo was represented by Attorney-at-law, Surihya Sabsook.
