Charity, Black Bush, East Coast flood waters begin to recede

Residents in Charity, Essequibo Coast, Black Bush and East Coast Demerara have begun to experience some amount of relief as flood waters have started to recede. This came following the placement of drainage pumps in several areas by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority. “I’m happy to report that just days after visiting these areas, we were able to bring some amount of relief to the residents,” Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said. The Minister along with Prime Minister Mark Phillips visited several of these flood stricken areas. Meanwhile,  Unity, Hope, Cane Grove along the East Coast corridor continue to experience this relief.

Minister Mustapha had instructed the NDIA to have two machines sent to the area to begin clearing several drainage channels. Residents from those areas and others  along the Coast who were affected, appealed to the Minister for assistance, noting that little maintenance works have been carried out on a number of areas’ main drainage channels and canals for some time.

On Thursday, NDIA commenced clearing a number of canals that were blocked in Hope Estate areas on the East Coast of Demerara, which has contributed to flood waters receding in certain areas. Further, a machine was deployed to commence clearing of approximately 2000 rods of drainage channel in Unity. That machine is expected to commence work tomorrow, with that intervention expected to service both farming and residential areas that are flooded.
