An elder in the church was on Thursday charged and released on bail for allegedly defrauding a man.

Paul Watson, a former member of the Guyana Police Force who resides at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts.

Watson pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that he obtained monies by false pretense. The accused who was represented by Attorney-at-law Bernard Dasilva was released on $100,000 bail.

According to information, Watson collected $420,000 from an individual by falsely pretending that he was in a position to assist the individual with obtaining a firearm license.

Watson who currently works with a private security service was previously charged for matters of a similar nature, the Guyana Police Force noted in a statement.

In the statement, the Police Force called on anyone who might have been defrauded by Watson to make a report to the nearest police station.
