Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure with responsibility for aviation, Annette Ferguson has confirmed to the BIG Smith Crime Watch that a plane crashed upon landing at Eteringbang airstrip, Region 7, resulting in the death of the pilot.

The dead pilot has been identified as Randy Liverpool who was flying a privately operated plane at the time of the incident.

According to the minister, the crash reportedly took place sometime around 17:00hrs on Thursday February 21.

There is no immediate information coming to the BIG Smith Crime Watch which can confirm the number of persons who were on board at the time or what cargo if any, was being carried by the aircraft.

There was also no immediate word on where the plane might have departed from as the Civil Aviation Authority is in the process of gathering that and other information.

Over the last few months, beginning in November last year, eyes have been on the aviation operations in Guyana.

In November a Fly Jamaica Plane crash landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport after the plane began developing hydraulic problems, a number of passengers were injured with one succumbing to injuries suspected to have been sustained as a result of the plane crash.

In January of this year, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority had cause to ground a number of Cessna planes at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport after the landing gear of one of the planes operated by Air Services Limited collapsed.

On Monday last a single engine plane crash landed in an abandoned marijuana farm on the West bank Demerara after it reportedly ran out of fuel.

There were no deaths recorded in that incident but the plane was at the time transporting a deceased missionary.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is investigating this recent incident.
