It’s awful; it’s an awful thing- Former Pres. Samuel Hinds on Karimbaksh Rape Scandal

October 19, 2026
Former President of Guyana Samuel Hinds on Monday described the rape allegations and death threats report against Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head of the Special Organised Crime Unit Fizal Karimbaksh as awful given the circumstances of the report and the fact that he remains on the job.

Hinds was at the time responding to a question raised by this publication during a telephone interview on Monday, October 19, 2026.
Hinds, also a former Prime Minister of Guyana, reminded that he is not in Guyana as often anymore and that his comment on the matter might not be helpful.
“I am not there so I don’t have all the nuances, but certainly as you put it, it is not a good thing; certainly he and his lawyers have a different story, but I would say it’s awful, it’s an awful thing,” Hinds, who is Guyana’s serving Ambassador to the United States, noted.
The Guyana Police Force, two weeks ago, misled the nation by stating that Deputy Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh was sent on leave in light of rape and death threat allegations which were levelled against him.
However, it turned out that the very next day. Karimbaksh turned up for work and then, through his lawyer, challenged a letter which was issued to him by Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken.
After Karimbaksh refused to proceed on leave, he was then informed by one of his juniors that he was barred from entering the Special Organized Crime Unit where he serves as the head. Karimbaksh again challenged that instruction and placed the Commissioner of Police on notice that he would take legal proceedings against him, as the order to block him from entering his office was preventing him from doing his lawful duty
