France erupts in riots as mass protests leave cities in chaos

France is grappling with widespread unrest following nationwide demonstrations that escalated into rioting, looting and clashes with police, leaving businesses damaged, public buildings destroyed and thousands of people arrested.

The unrest intensified over the weekend of October 17–18, as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets to protest rising living costs, deteriorating public services, poor school conditions and broader dissatisfaction with the government of President Emmanuel Macron.

According to Reuters, more than half a million people participated in demonstrations across the country on Saturday, October 17. Although many marches remained peaceful, violent groups reportedly attacked businesses, vandalised public property and clashed with security forces.

Paris, Marseille and several other cities experienced significant disruption, with shops looted, vehicles set ablaze and public buildings targeted. One of the most serious incidents occurred in Limoges, where a historic town hall was severely damaged by fire.

Authorities reported approximately 2,400 arrests following the weekend’s unrest, while hundreds of police officers and other security personnel were injured. One demonstrator also died after suffering a cardiac arrest during protests in Paris, according to Reuters reporting.

The scale of the violence has raised serious questions about public safety, policing and the government’s ability to contain the unrest.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has called for local authorities to consider imposing limited, area-specific curfews to prevent further violence and looting. He has not ruled out declaring a state of emergency but has indicated that targeted measures are preferable for now.

President Macron has condemned the destruction while acknowledging that peaceful demonstrators have legitimate concerns about the cost of living and the quality of public services.

The government has also faced criticism over its security preparations, particularly after reports of extensive damage to businesses and public infrastructure. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered to resign, but Macron rejected the offer and instructed him to address the security shortcomings.

The unrest comes as France faces mounting economic pressures and political uncertainty ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Opposition figures have criticised the government’s handling of the crisis, while officials have blamed violent extremist groups and individuals involved in looting for escalating the demonstrations.

The protests also reflect wider concerns about the affordability of living in France, the state of public education and confidence in political leadership.

As authorities assess the damage and work to restore order, further demonstrations and trade union actions remain a concern. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the government’s measures can contain the violence or whether the unrest will continue to spread.
