Republican Gym celebrates successful return with National Novices crown
Republican Gym’s return to the ring was made possible through a collaboration involving the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Boxing Association, paving the way for prisoners to once again participate in organised boxing competition
Republican Boxing Gym marked its return to organised competition by winning the Andrew Lewis National Novices Championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The gym accumulated 32 points, seven more than the Guyana Police Force, to claim the overall title. The Guyana Defence Force, which had dominated the tournament for several years, did not participate.
Middleweight Ezekiel Gordon was named Best Boxer after defeating Police standout Shakeel Cox in the final, while Republican’s Wincell Thomas collected the Best Coach award.
Republican also secured victories through Mark Joseph, Rodwell Fraser, Helton Gibson, Kennard Smith, Shania Benjamin and Veronica Gordon. Its return was facilitated by cooperation among the Ministry of Home Affairs, Guyana Prison Service and Guyana Boxing Association.
