Guyana/Suriname Ferry Service temporarily suspended

August 22 2026
The Canawaima Ferry Service has temporarily suspended operations, affecting travel between Guyana and Suriname.
In a statement posted to the Ministryof Public Works social pages, the Canawaima Ferry Service said two technical inspections were conducted in recent days by maritime experts from Guyana and Suriname on the M.V. Canawaima.
According to the service, experts from both countries concluded that the vessel could remain in operation until it enters drydock within the next three months. However, the Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) subsequently insisted that certain matters which were expected to be addressed during the drydocking process be dealt with immediately.
The Canawaima Ferry Service noted that responsibility for the vessel’s maintenance and drydocking falls under Suriname.
The Boards on both the Guyana and Suriname sides remain in communication and are working together to facilitate the resumption of the ferry service.
The service acknowledged the inconvenience caused to passengers and users and said efforts are being made to restore operations as soon as possible.
