Safety Audit Team established to review maritime standards

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced the establishment of a Safety and Compliance Audit Team to conduct a comprehensive review of the safety and compliance standards governing marine vessels operating in Guyana.
The move forms part of the Government’s continuing response measures aimed at strengthening maritime safety and preventing future tragedies following the MV Barima disaster.
The three-member team comprises former Director-General of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), Dr. Ivor English; former Harbour Master of Guyana, Volton Skeete; and Marine Officer and Surveyor of Ships, Captain Joseph Lewis.
According to the President, the team brings extensive technical expertise and practical experience in marine administration, maritime operations, and ship inspection and surveying.
The audit team has been tasked with examining compliance with applicable maritime safety requirements and making recommendations to strengthen oversight, improve enforcement, and ensure that Guyana’s vessels, operators and regulatory systems meet the highest practicable standards of safety and accountability.

Safety and Compliance Audit Team
“As part of government’s continuing response measures to strengthen maritime safety and prevent future tragedies, I have established a Safety and Compliance Audit Team to undertake a comprehensive review of the safety and compliance standards governing marine vessels operating in Guyana.
The Team will comprise Dr Ivor English, former Director-General of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD); Mr Volton Skeete, former Harbour Master of Guyana; and Captain Joseph Lewis, Marine Officer and Surveyor of Ships. Collectively, they bring to this important task a wealth of technical expertise, practical experience and knowledge in marine administration, maritime operations and the inspection and surveying of ships.
The Team will examine compliance with applicable maritime safety requirements and make recommendations to strengthen oversight, improve enforcement and ensure that our vessels, operators and regulatory systems meet the highest practicable standards of safety and accountability.”
