Policeman remanded for murdering Cuban girlfriend

A 20-year-old police constable was on Monday remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of 26-year-old Cuban national Dailen Paneque Gomez, whose decomposing body was discovered last week in the Enmore Backdam.

Randy Thomas of Chelsea Park, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate T. Mohamed via Zoom at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge was read to him. He was not required to plead and was remanded to prison until July 21, when the matter will be called for a report.

Thomas was charged with the murder of Gomez, which police allege occurred between June 18 and June 24, 2026, at Enmore South, East Coast Demerara.

The charge follows an investigation into the disappearance of Gomez, who was reported missing after she was last seen on June 18 boarding a bus for work.

Police allege that digital evidence placed Gomez in Thomas’ vehicle shortly before she vanished. Investigators have also said the two were involved in a relationship.

According to investigators, Thomas allegedly confessed to luring Gomez to Enmore, where an argument reportedly erupted before he fatally shot her with an unlicensed firearm. He is also accused of disposing of her body in nearby bushes and attempting to destroy evidence, including cleaning his vehicle and discarding the victim’s cellphone, the spent shell, and the weapon.

The Guyana Police Force’s investigations into the matter are continuing.
