Tour Guide Leon “Rasta” Baird was laid to rest on Friday, May 15, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, more than four months after his charred remains were discovered inside a burnt vehicle in the South Rupununi.

A relative confirmed that the funeral service was finally held following months of delay as the family sought a second post-mortem examination by a Trinidadian pathologist. However, the request for an overseas expert was rejected by the Medical Council of Guyana.

Government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh had earlier concluded that Baird died as a result of burns.

Baird, a tour guide at Wichabai Ranch in the South Rupununi, was last seen alive on January 23. His burnt body was discovered three days later inside a torched company vehicle.

Following investigations, Ken Faria, a Community Development Officer from Central Rupununi, has been charged with his murder.
