Hydromet cautions heavy rain and flooding until May 15

The Guyana Hydrometeorological Service (Hydromet) is continuing to closely monitor unstable weather conditions across the country as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms remain active over several regions, raising concerns about flooding in vulnerable communities.

Recent weather data released by the agency shows that Guyana is currently being affected by strong moisture convergence and unstable atmospheric conditions linked to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). These systems are expected to trigger periods of intense rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms over the coming days.

Hydromet warned that low-lying and flood-prone communities could experience rising water levels as soils in many areas are already heavily saturated from previous rainfall. Officials also noted that regions with poor drainage may face temporary flooding if the current weather pattern persists.

Forecast models indicate that some locations could receive significant rainfall accumulations within short periods, increasing the risk of overtopping drains, water accumulation on roadways, and minor flooding in residential communities. Residents living near creeks, trenches, and riverbanks are being urged to remain alert.

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has also encouraged citizens to take the necessary precautions, including clearing drains, securing important belongings, and avoiding unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and reduced visibility.
Hydromet said weather conditions will continue to be monitored around the clock, with additional advisories expected if the situation intensifies.

Citizens are encouraged to follow official updates and remain prepared as the rainy conditions continue affecting parts of the country.
