Three government ministries on Friday held a joint meeting aimed at improving coordination in the management, maintenance, and development of parks, recreational grounds, and other public spaces across Guyana.
In a statement, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development said the engagement brought together officials from that ministry, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Public Works to discuss how responsibilities for these community assets can be more clearly defined and effectively managed.
During the discussions, officials reviewed existing mandates and operational roles related to the upkeep and development of public spaces, with a focus on strengthening collaboration among the agencies involved.
The meeting also examined ways to improve coordination so that maintenance works, infrastructure upgrades, and recreational programming can be delivered more efficiently while avoiding duplication of efforts.
Participants agreed that clearly defining the roles of each ministry will strengthen accountability and help ensure that parks and recreational facilities remain safe, accessible, and well maintained for communities across the country.
The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development also underscored the importance of working closely with municipalities and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, which play a key role in the day-to-day management of community spaces.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports highlighted the role of parks and recreational grounds in promoting youth engagement, sports development, and community activities, while the Ministry of Public Works emphasized its responsibility in supporting infrastructure improvements and technical works in public areas.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to develop a more coordinated national approach to guide the future planning, maintenance, and upgrading of parks, recreational grounds, and other public spaces throughout Guyana.
