Mandela fatal crash under police investigation

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 01:50 hrs on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the Nelson Mandela Avenue Roundabout in Georgetown, which claimed the lives of a man and a teenage girl.
Dead are Kenneth Johnson of ‘A’ Field, Sophia, East Coast Demerara, who was driving motor car PAL 2882, and 15-year-old Kelly Johnson, who was seated in the front passenger seat.
Police said a 12-year-old boy, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle and is also from the same address, survived the crash but is currently admitted in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Initial investigations revealed that the car was proceeding west along Aubrey Barker Road when, upon approaching the Nelson Mandela Avenue Roundabout, the driver allegedly lost control while negotiating the turn.
The vehicle reportedly collided with the concrete median and overturned several times before coming to a stop on the western parapet of the Nelson Mandela to Eccles Inter-Link Road.
As a result of the collision, the driver and the front-seat passenger sustained severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor on duty.
The injured child was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remains under medical care.
The bodies of the deceased were later escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where they are awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Police also noted that CCTV cameras were observed in the area and will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
