New Solar Farm Strengthens Guyana’s Grid

The Government of Guyana on Saturday commissioned the 3MWp Prospect Solar Farm in Region 6, adding another major facility to the country’s expanding portfolio of utility-scale renewable energy projects.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said the project’s timely completion reflects disciplined implementation and strong strategic focus. He commended the contractor for meeting the delivery schedule and noted that the new installation will bolster GPL’s operational capacity, improve energy security, and support the modernisation of a grid designed to accommodate growing industrial demands.

Prime Minister Phillips emphasised that Guyana’s investments in renewable energy align with a unified national strategy aimed at meeting global clean-energy targets while keeping pace with rapid national development. The series of GUYSOL projects, he said, will provide reliable power to thousands of households across multiple regions, helping to build an integrated energy system capable of supporting long-term economic growth.

He added that the commissioning of the Prospect facility demonstrates Guyana’s continued transformation of its energy matrix and reinforces its position as a regional leader in large-scale renewable energy deployment. The Prime Minister also highlighted the programme’s role in advancing gender equality in technical fields, noting that 31 women have already been trained under the initiative.

“The Prospect Solar Farm stands as a symbol of national progress and our commitment to a resilient and sustainable energy future,” he stated.

Providing technical details, Mr. Kesh Nandlall, Team Leader of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, explained that the project—funded under the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL)—represents an investment of GY$1.2 billion.

He reported that the solar farm is equipped with 4,928 modules mounted on corrosion-resistant structures and supported by eight high-efficiency inverters. Engineered to withstand wind speeds of up to 244 km/h, the system links to the Demerara–Berbice Interconnected System through a newly constructed 13.8kV spur line feeding into the Canefield F3 feeder.

Nandlall noted that the facility is expected to produce roughly 4,800 megawatt-hours of clean energy annually—enough to power thousands of homes—while offsetting more than 3,200 tonnes of carbon emissions and cutting approximately GY$210 million in fossil fuel costs each year.

The Prospect Solar Farm is the third major solar installation commissioned in recent weeks, following the 3MWp Hampshire project in Region 6 and the 5MWp Onderneeming facility in Region 2.

Under the GUYSOL Programme, eight solar farms totalling 33MWp are currently being developed across Regions 2, 5, 6, and 10. In Berbice alone, the Prospect, Hampshire, and soon-to-be-commissioned Trafalgar facilities will collectively add 10MWp of clean, new generating capacity to the regional grid.
