Three men were remanded to prison on Monday after being charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The accused — Martin Gomez, of no fixed place of abode; Colin Moore, of Lot 77 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara; and Fawaaz Barakat, of Lot 17 Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara — appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts.

The trio was jointly charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.

It is alleged that on Wednesday, July 9, at MovieTowne, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, the men were found in possession of 16.784 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The charge followed an investigation conducted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU).

All three defendants pleaded not guilty. Moore and Barakat were represented by attorney-at-law Bernard DaSilva, while Gomez was represented by Attorney-at-Law Siand  Dhurjon.

They were all remanded to prison until August 19, when the matter will return to court for report and disclosure.

According to CANU, the cocaine was discovered after ranks intercepted two vehicles in Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown. The substance — described as a whitish powdery material — was packaged in several parcels and later tested positive for cocaine.
