 -Amid Dispute Over Election Role

June 18 2025

Opposition Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir has formally resigned from the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), marking a significant development within the party ahead of the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

Her departure reportedly follows a recent high-level meeting with PNCR Leader and Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, during which discussions were held regarding her potential role in the upcoming elections and her future in the National Assembly. According to the party, Walton-Desir had sought formal commitments concerning her extraction from the party’s list and her inclusion in the campaign structure.

A prominent and outspoken figure within the opposition, Walton-Desir is expected to host a press conference on Wednesday morning, where she is likely to provide further insights into her resignation and outline her next steps in the political arena.

In an official statement, the PNCR claimed that Norton assured Walton-Desir that she would be appointed to Parliament and serve on the campaign management team in the event the coalition returns to government. The party also noted that Walton-Desir was invited to have a representative present at the meeting but opted not to. Instead of following up after consultation with her team, she submitted her resignation.

The PNCR has since challenged aspects of Walton-Desir’s public resignation, particularly her assertion that no offer or clarity was given regarding her role. The party described this as a “gross misrepresentation” and said it felt compelled to publicly correct the narrative.

Despite the disagreement, the party acknowledged Walton-Desir’s contributions and extended best wishes for her future endeavours.
