October 13 2024– More than 3,000 young people gathered today at the Tain UG Campus in Region 6 for a Youth Conference organized by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

The event, part of the PPP’s ongoing efforts to engage and recruit young members, featured a keynote address by the party’s General Secretary and Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.

Dr. Jagdeo spoke to the enthusiastic crowd about the rich history of the PPP and its youth arm, the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO).

He highlighted the pivotal role the PYO played in the party’s political activism over the years, especially during the fight against the PNC dictatorship and the battle for democracy in the 1970s and 1980s, which culminated in the restoration of democratic rule in 1992.

The General Secretary emphasized the importance of the PYO as a training ground for future leaders, noting that many of the PPP’s top figures, including President Irfaan Ali and himself, began their political careers within the organization.

He urged the young attendees to remain disciplined and committed to the party’s ideals, stressing that these qualities have been central to the PPP’s enduring strength.

Dr. Jagdeo also outlined the government’s ambitious plans for the development of Region 6, which include major infrastructure projects such as the construction of Hope-like canals, a four-lane highway, and new community roads.

Additionally, he highlighted opportunities for personal growth through training programs at the Guyana Technical Training College in Port Mourant.

Following his address, the Vice President engaged with the youth in an interactive session, fielding questions and discussing their concerns.

The conference concluded with breakout sessions, where participants were able to raise issues they believe should be prioritized by the party and government.

This conference is one in a series of similar events held across the country as the PPP intensifies its recruitment drive among the younger generation.
