Unattended baby drowns as mother forget gates open

Woman takes her life after checking into short-time hotel

A couple from West Demerara are mourning the loss of their eighteen month old baby girl who drowned on Monday afternoon after being left unattended briefly by her mother who began bathing her and left to go and grab a towel. Dead is Aleena Mohamed of Lot 5 Harlem, West Coast Demerara. The incident took place on Monday between 17 and 18:00.hrs

Her mother Kaishrie Ramchand 23 years old told detective that at the back of the yard has a sheep pend with two gates, one to the front and one to the back. When she took the child into the yard to bathe, she said that she forgot that both gates to the pen were open. the back gate leads to a trench which runs behinds the properties in that area.

Forgetting the gates to the pen open, she went upstairs to grab the towel for the child and when she returned the child was nowhere to be found, she raised an alarm and person rush to her assistance and a search in the trench was conducted and the child’s lifeless body was fished out.

Police sources said that there were no marks of violence on the body, the child was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor who examined her. The body is await a postmortem examination.
