Victim Declines to Testify Against Ex-Boyfriend in Attempted Murder Case

A year after a brutal cutlass attack left her paralyzed and living in fear, 35-year-old Sandy Persaud has declined to testify against her ex-boyfriend, Sasenarne Sankar, known as ‘Wire,’ who was facing an attempted murder charge.

Persaud, also known as ‘Baby,’ had previously alleged that on April 5, 2023, Sankar barged into her mother’s house at around 5:00 a.m. and attacked her with a cutlass, inflicting severe injuries to her head, back, legs, and fingers.

The assault occurred on the same day she was scheduled to obtain a restraining order against him. Sankar also allegedly assaulted Persaud’s mother before fleeing the scene.

Following the attack, Persaud underwent emergency surgery and was hospitalized for several weeks, unable to move without assistance. She expressed frustration with the Region Six police for failing to apprehend Sankar, who she claimed continued to threaten her and her family.

“He called my brother and said he’s going to kill my brother, me, and my daughter,” she said in one interview. “Nobody wants to keep me. I have to continue to hide out because they didn’t arrest him.”

Persaud also alleged that Sankar had been physically abusive throughout their relationship and that after their breakup, he posted explicit images of her on social media and made threats to a woman at whose home she had sought refuge.

She further claimed he attacked her with a knife a week before the cutlass incident, but two passersby rescued her.

Despite extensive searches and a wanted bulletin issued for Sankar, he managed to evade capture until May 9, 2024, when police apprehended him at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, near the Suriname/Guyana ferry crossing.

He was charged with attempted murder and appeared virtually in the No. 75 Village Magistrates’ Court on May 29, 2024.

However, in a sworn statement to the court, Persaud indicated she did not want to proceed with the matter against Sankar.

The case was subsequently discharged. Police sources revealed that Persaud reportedly received $500,000 in compensation from Sankar.
