The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) kicked off its Annual Officers’ Conference yesterday under the theme “Adapting to change, leading with innovation and resilience”.

The conference featured presentations from senior officers of the GFS and welcomed esteemed guests including the Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, Chief of Defence Brigadier Omar Khan, Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliott, Deputy Head of CANU Rayon Samuels, Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham, senior officers of the Guyana Service, and other special invitees.

Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham, in his opening remarks, acknowledged the country’s significant developments, particularly in infrastructure and the oil industry. He stressed the GFS’s commitment to staying relevant through strategic development approaches. Despite challenges, Chief Wickham highlighted the Service’s efforts in building capacity, delivering excellent service, and expanding ambulance services to Region 3, with plans for further expansion.

He outlined various fire safety and prevention programs targeting the public, including market outreaches, kids camps, and school visits. Chief Wickham also addressed challenges like the increase in grass and wildfires due to the El Niño dry season, with resource allocation in the 2024 budget earmarked to address these issues. He emphasized the importance of training and collaborations to enhance the Service.

The Chief introduced new initiatives such as recognizing exceptional performers and organizing annual drill competitions to boost morale among stations. He reiterated the GFS’s commitment to innovation and resilience in adapting to changes for the country’s benefit.

Home Affairs Minister Hon. Robeson Benn highlighted the Fire Department’s challenges and stressed the need for preparedness and awareness to mitigate fires. He proposed tailored responses for hard-to-reach areas and advocated for “Fire Victims Awareness Day” on May 21.

Minister Benn emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the Fire Service through new investments and collaborations with regional and international partners. This includes discussions with the United Kingdom and Angloco for new appliances and engagements with a specialized team from Brazil for preliminary assessments of fires.

The conference, as per a statement from the GFS, will continue today with further presentations and a team-building workshop for the officers.
