(Lennox Wayne aka “Two Colour”; the late Ashmini Hariram)

The trial of Lennox Wayne called “Two Colour” who is accused of the murder of 19-year-old Lusignan, East Coast Demerara cosmetologist Ashmini Hariram ended on Friday in a hung jury.  The jury returned with its verdict at exactly 18:15 h, after deliberating for over four hours. The jury told Trial Judge Sandil Kissoon that further direction would not aid in breaking the deadlock.

As such, the Trial Judge declared a mistrial and ordered that Wayne be further remanded to prison pending a new trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Criminal Assizes. Upon his indictment last month, Wayne pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on July 10, 2014, he murdered  Harriram.

Wayne was represented by Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes and associates, while the case for the Prosecution was presented by State Counsel Lisa Cave and State Counsel Mohamed Ali. This was Wayne’s second trial for the capital offence. His first trial in 2017 also ended in a hung jury before High Court Judge Jo Ann Barlow.

Another man, Melroy Doris, a taxi driver, who was jointly charged with Wayne for the teen’s killing pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter in April 2021 and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by Justice Brassington Reynolds.

According to reports, on the day in question, Hariram and her cousin were walking along Lusignan Public Road when they saw a burgundy motorcar, PRR 8370 parked along the said road. A few minutes after, Hariram was shot to the head. Police investigations revealed that Doris was in possession of the car at the time the teen was shot. Wayne reportedly gave Police a caution statement admitting to the crime.
