Approximately one year after the idea was conceived, the New Amsterdam Recreational Park was commissioned earlier today.

President of Guyana Dr. Irfaan Ali in his remarks noted that New Amsterdam is in the process of a great transformation process and he is extremely pleased with the level of work put into developing the facility.

The Head of State added that under the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) leadership, this is another excellent initiative in the transformation of the community.

He remarked that the upliftment of any successful project, including this, depends on a full army comprising of young people, businesses etc, coming together as ‘One Guyana.’

President Ali said that the combined efforts of the Ministry of Public Works, The Office of the First Lady, the Regional Support Team etc, ensured that works on the facility moved along at a fast pace to ensure this grand achievement for the region.

He noted that while minor works are still ongoing, the park will be completely accessible to members of the community, there will also be additional installation of equipment for children.

The President explained that in order to build a great community, its residents need to be of great health and spirit, noting that one of the facility’s purposes is for it to be used as a place of relief and comfort to support mental health to ensure the support of social cohesion and community health and wellness.

The facility will also be equipped with resources to support women and youth development, which will include classes and programs in Karate etc being offered there.

He reiterated the need for the space to be treated with respect as it was built with the intention of being a family-oriented facility with features which will comprise of benches, lights, walking ring, playground and will include police presence to ensure safety.

He urged persons to enjoy the space, as it will soon be equipped with WIFI for the benefit of all and to optimize the value of the facility, and to treat the space as more than “just a park,” as it will take a collective responsibility to ensure it is well taken care of.

The Head of State added that the region will benefit from many more of these parks in the near future, as the development is supported by economic ventures and infrastructure as it is the key to economic transformation in the region.

First Lady Arya Ali, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, Regional Chairman David Armogan, among members of the New Amsterdam Town Council were also in attendance.
