86-Y-O among nine displaced by Mocha fire

The gutted upper flat of the Mocha house from Sunday night’s fire

An extended family of nine was displaced on Sunday evening after their home at Lot 8 Carol’s Place Mocha, East Bank Demerara was gutted by fire.

The fire which is said to have started in a room in the upper flat of the two storey building completely destroyed the upper flat while the lower flat suffer loss and damage as a result of water and fire falling from the upper flat.

Speaking with Magnel Roberts 37, of the said address, she explained that she operates a shop in the lower flat of the building and also vends fish and chips from a mobile unit in-front of her home.

According to the woman, her sister raised an alarm after seeing fire in the upper flat of the building and persons who were at the location assisted in forming a bucket brigade to put out the fire but it was unsuccessful.

They reported that the fire service was contacted but the team took a while to respond.

The mother of three said she along her children, her dad, a brother and two children for her deceased sister live at the location. Two of the children are school aged.

Roberts told BIG Smith News Watch that the house is not insured.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
