$50M spent to upgrade National Stadium for West Indies/Pakistan games

The Government has invested $50M to upgrade the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) to prepare for the upcoming West Indies home series tour against Pakistan starting this weekend.

During a walkthrough of the facility earlier on Friday, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jnr. noted that the facility was neglected requiring the upgrade to infrastructure.

Following a football match at the Stadium earlier in 2021, concerns were raised about damage to the ground but the Minister was quick to point out that the sum was invested in the infrastructure and not the ground.

“…now it is in a very good condition, and we are going to continue to really make this facility a world class facility and expand it,” he noted.

According to Minister Ramson, all is set for the games. He was accompanied by members of the Guyana Police Force, Cricket West Indies and others.

The second, third, fourth and fifth T20 internationals of the West Indies versus Pakistan series would see forty percent stadium capacity filled by fully vaccinated fans this weekend. Tickets for the games went on sale on Wednesday.

The Minister pointed out that it is important for persons to be fully vaccinated atleast two weeks prior to attending the event as efforts continue to tackle the pandemic.
