Three killed, two in hospital following Linden Highway accident

The ill-fated car

Three persons who were sitting on the shoulder of the road along the Soesdyke Linden Highway were mowed down Sunday night after a car driven by a member of the Guyana Fire Service lost control and collided with them.

Dead are 87 Year old Antonio Henry, 40-year-old Meleena Emamarels and 8-year-old Akese Jarome. Aleena Persaud 8 years old was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she has been placed in the ICU while Rodwell Jarome 50 is at the McKenzie Hospitals under observation.

According to the details surrounding the incident, at about 21:50 hours, the family were sitting along the curb of the road (a common practice for residents who live along the Soesdyke Linden Highway) when the car PHH 6628 driven by the 39-year-old GDF rank of Lot 11 Rainbow City McKenzie was approaching at a fast rate of speed.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the left side curb causing his vehicle to connect to all five of the persons who were sitting on the curb at the time.

We were told that public-spirited persons from around surrounding communities came out and assisted the police in transporting the injured persons to the hospital.

The 8-year-old was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Diamond Hospital, Henry and Emamarels were also picked up in unconscious conditions and taken to the McKenzie Hospital, all three were pronounced dead on arrival at the two separate hospitals.

No trace of alcohol was found in the bloodstream of the driver of the car.

Thus far a total of six persons have died over the weekend in reported accidents that took place along the Soesdyke Linden Highway and East bank Demerara between Friday and Sunday evenings.

On Friday night, a man was struck down and killed in a hit and run accident along the Soesdyke Linden Highway, on Saturday night, two friends were killed and one remained critical following an accident at Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara then this crash Sunday night which claimed the lives of three persons. In all instances, speeding was reported as a contributing factor.
