Essequibo top CSEC top achievers awarded for performances

The top performers in Region 2 who wrote the Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) were earlier this week awarded for their outstanding performances. The award ceremony was held in Anna Regina.

The Regional Democratic Council in collaboration with the Department of Education, and a member of the private sector pulled off the event in the students’ honor.

Duvina Seurattan, Swasti Saytoo and Tabitha Alves were the awardees. Seurattan and Saytoo attended the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School where Seurattan was listed as the second place best performing student in the country.

Saytoo secured the country’s third position. Tabitha Alves, on the other hand, is a student of the Abrams Zuil Secondary, who copped the 10th position in the country.

Each student received a monetary award along with a plaque and trophy from the organisers.

Regional Vice Chairman, Humace Odit told the students that while their CSEC performances were outstanding for the region, they need to still keep advancing their education to achieve impressive academic standing.

“Use your CSEC results to further your studies, so you can serve our society even better.” He explained.

Regional Chairman Vilma Da Silva told the young ladies of the importance for them to have a sound education as she underscored that it is important for women to succeed academically to build their chances of coming out of difficult circumstances.

“In all your endeavours, put your academic life ahead of everything else. Eventually, everything else is going to fall into place. But the time is now for you to focus on your education.” She advised.

Representing the Ministry of Education was Nicola Matthews, the Regional Educational Officer for Region 2.

Matthews explained that the education system was really challenged for the last 13 months due to COVID.

According to her, “To date, we are still struggling to find ways to ensure curriculum effectiveness in our delivery of education and the structure of education delivery has changed drastically with most sessions being online.” She stated.

The Education officer like others at the ceremony wished the young ladies well for overcoming difficult times in the education sector.
