Nelroy Barry, 36, a mason, who was found guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl back in September, was given a 17-year prison sentence on Tuesday.

Barry, also known as “Cock,” was tried before Justice Jo Ann Barlow at the Demerara High Court and was found unanimously guilty of the crime by a jury.

The prosecution said that on January 7, 2020, the girl went to Barry’s house in search of someone. Barry then began making sexual advances toward her, subsequently raping her.

He was arrested and charged after the crime was reported to the Police.

Barry asserted in a probation officer interview that he was not aware the girl was a minor. The girl was raped two days before her birthday.

During her sentencing speech, the Judge emphasised the frequency of sexual offences involving minor victims and said that the court must make it clear to potential offenders, through its sentences, that their behaviour will not be accepted by the court.

This convict was represented by Attorney-at-Law Tamieka Clarke while State Counsel Latifah Elliot and other State Counsel prosecuted this matter.

Barry’s co-defendant, Calvin Reid, also a mason, is presently awaiting a fresh trial since the jury was unable to reach a decision regarding the charge against him.

Reid is out on cash bail.

Meanwhile, Barry is awaiting trial at the High Court for attempting to kill his former girlfriend.

In April 2021, he allegedly chopped the woman about her body, causing her to receive severe injuries after accusing her of cheating on him.
