Former Prison Warder Sheldon Prince, who stabbed his wife to death in 2016 in the compound of the National Psychiatric Hospital at Fort Canje, Berbice, pleaded guilty to murder on Monday. He appeared before Berbice High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon.

Prince, 35, formerly of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice admitted that on December 28, 2016, at the National Psychiatric Hospital, Fort Canje, Berbice, he murdered his wife, 22-year-old Lonette Nicholson- Prince.

Sentencing for Prince has been deferred to March 1. He was represented by Senior Counsel Murseline Bacchus, while State Counsel Abigail Gibbs presented the case for the prosecution.

Nicholson-Prince, who was a hairdresser at the Psychiatric Hospital, had just arrived at work when Prince, a prison officer at the Mazaruni Prison, attacked her with a knife.

The woman died as a result of shock and haemorrhage due to several stab wounds. Prince and his now-dead wife have a 10-year-old daughter together.
