A fire which started after 00:12 hours on Friday morning completely destroyed a two storied concrete house at Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara and killing 65 year old Rovna Hassan in the process.

According to what was communicated to the BIG Smith Crime Watch, the fire is suspected to have been electrical in origin.

When the BIG Smith Crime Watch visited the fire scene this morning at Lot 22 Non Pariel Public Road East Coast Demerara, smoke was still emanating from the rubble even as smashed concrete and scorched metal can be seen littering the compound.

Two business places which are located to the left and right and of the building were also slightly damaged by the blaze but those business, namely a tyre shop and a hardware store were open for business this morning when we visited.

One person indicated that the woman was last seen alive on Wednesday. We were told that recently she went to stay with her relatives in another village but then was brought back home after she began feeling ill.

According to information which also came to the BIG Smith Crime Watch, the woman might have been having some difficulty finding the keys to the house after the fire started and she eventually perished.

Her remains were found in the lower flat of the building.

One relative indicated to us this morning that attempts are being made to have the postmortem performed today so that the woman can be buried in accordance with Muslim tradition.

The investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

The BIG Smith Crime Watch extends condolences to the relatives and friends of Mrs. Rovna Hassan.
