Police have arrested a 23-year-old woman after she attempted to smuggle a quantity of cannabis into the New Amsterdam prison concealed in two Papaws.

The incident occurred at about 14:28h on Wednesday.

The Guyana Police Force in a statement said the woman was visiting the facility to take food for an inmate. During a routine search, “five bulky parcels wrapped with transparent plastic containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found hidden in two papayas.”

The matter was reported to the Police at Central Police Station and the suspected narcotic handed over. The suspected cannabis was weighed in the woman’s presence and it amounted to 192 grams.

The suspect was told of the offence committed, cautioned and arrested. She remains in custody pending charges.
