‘Shots’ slapped with life sentence over deadly home invasion

A Sophia resident has been handed a life sentence, with the possibility of parole after 20-years, for the killing of a father of four during a home invasion back in 2019.

Initially charged with the murder of Darrell Breedy, a resident of Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Terrence Pitt, also known as ‘Shots’ and ‘Sonna Boy,’ aged 31, opted to plead guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.

Pitt, a father of one from Sophia, Greater Georgetown, appeared before the Demerara High Court on Tuesday for his sentencing hearing, presided over by Judge Jo Ann Barlow.

He was represented by Attorney-at-Law Kiswana Jefford, while State Counsel Praneta Seeraj appeared on behalf of the prosecution.

Breedy, aged 53, lost his life on October 5, 2019, during a robbery at his residence.

He was fatally shot after resisting two men, who broke into his home and stole $11,000 in cash, a television set, and cellular phones.

Pitt claimed during the court proceedings that he had a toy gun, while his accomplice, known as ‘Pop Skull,’ wielded the real firearm.

Evidence presented revealed that Pitt and his accomplice were prowling the Festival City neighbourhood on the night of the incident, looking for homes to break-in.

Breedy, a well-known tout who operated at the Georgetown Magistrates Courts and also worked in the construction industry, left behind a grieving family.

Another man, 24-year-old Leon Patterson from B Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, has been charged in connection with Breedy’s murder and is currently awaiting trial.

In addition to his involvement in Breedy’s death, Pitt had previously been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in February 2020 for escaping from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Eve Leary, Georgetown.

Pitt used a ‘pointer’ from a broom to pick the lock of his handcuffs between November 11 and 12, 2019, while being held in connection with Breedy’s murder.

He managed to escape but was recaptured on January 9, 2020, in the vicinity of Middle Road, La Penitence in Georgetown. Pitt has also served jail time for drug trafficking.
