RDC robbery suspect shot dead, one captured, three on the run

A suspect in the early morning robbery at the New Amsterdam, Berbice RDC office was shot dead and a driver of the getaway vehicle captured during a confrontation with detectives at Heathburn, Berbice, on Wednesday, September 13.
Two others are on the run.

Police retrieved a handgun, along with knives and a cutlass from the vehicle that was used by the robbers.
The detained driver was identified as Tarrique Pollard called ‘Tari’, a 33-year-old taxi driver from Mahicony, East Coast Demerara.
The vehicle, PSS 3448, is presently lodged at the Central Police Station.
The deadly confrontation began at around 12:00 p.m., when a officer and several ranks from the Central Police Station went to Heatburn in two vehicles.
While heading south, they received word about motor vehicle PSS 3448, which was proceeding in the opposite direction on the Heatburn road. On being signaled to stop, the driver stopped on the western corner of the road.
But as the policemen approached, the suspects opened fire and the vehicle sped off.
One of the policemen discharged a round in the direction of the vehicle, which stopped about 800 meters away.
The ranks gave chase and saw four persons exit the car. Three of the men ran towards the river on the western side.
The police also saw the driver lying on the ground.
The fleeing suspects managed to elude the cops after firing several rounds at the lawmen.
On checking the vehicle, the policemen found one of the suspects sitting motionless in the front passenger seat, with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
He was pronounced dead at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
The driver, who had surrendered, was taken into custody.
