Policeman among three killed in separate accidents

Three persons were killed in separate accidents between 20:00h on Saturday night and 05:00h Sunday including a Police Officer.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the first accident occurred on the Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) the life of 19-year-old Sachin Persaud of Diamond EBD.

At about 20:00h on Saturday, Persaud along with another male were crossing the public road from east to west when CCTV footage shows that Persaud stopped in the middle of the road while the second person ran to the other side. As a result, he was struck by motorcar # PXX 2746 owned and driven by 47-year-old Lesie Griffith of South Ruimveldt Park Georgetown. The video showed that a second car, PXX 8548 owned and driven by 49-year-old Vanburn Milo age of Kaneville, EBD, which was travelling behind the other car, ran him over.

The first driver told police that he observed the pedestrians crossing the road infront of him and applied brakes. However, given the close proximity to the persons, he and swerved east to avoid a collision but due to the short distance the left side rear view mirror of his vehicle collided with Persaud who fell.

The second driver said he noticed two motorcars swerve east into his drive lane in front of him and on seeing that he applied brakes and swerved west onto the western drive lane of the said road to avoid a collision with the said two motorcars. In doing so, he felt the front of his vehicle run over something and immediately stopped to investigate.

Upon checking he observed that he had run over a male pedestrian who was lying motionless underneath his vehicle.

Persaud was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers remain in custody assisting with further investigations.

At about 23:55h on Saturday, 34-year-old Police Sergeant Kwame Kellman also died as a result of a fatal incident which occurred on the Lusignan Public Road. Kellman was driving motorcar #PYY 3730 when he lost control and collided into a shop which is situated on the northern parapet of Lusignan Public Road.

Police say the Sergeant who hails of lot 40 Vigilance, ECD and stationed at the Grove Police Station. The impact of the collision caused him to receive injuries about his body. Public-spirited citizens went to his rescue and took him out of the motorcar but by then he had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

Meanwhile, at about 05:30h on Sunday, a 66-year-old man of Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was struck down by a motorcar #PMM 3502 owned and driven by 44-year-old Mahendranauth Soogrim Sucree of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

The incident occurred on the Windsor Forest Public Road.

The driver told police officers that he was proceeding west on the southern side of the road when he noticed the now dead man, Fiuz Hussaine, walking on the southern parapet on his phone. However, he alleged that Hussaine made a sudden turn right onto the main road into the path of his car resulting in a collision.

The pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious state by the driver and taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. There he was admitted as a patient suffering from head injuries and he subsequently died.

The driver remains in custody assisting in the investigation.
