PAHO/WHO gives GPHC 40 computers to digitize records

While some state entities and agencies continue to rely heavily on hardcopy documentation of records, the Georgetown Public Hospital is gradually moving towards to more efficient means of records keeping.. digitisation.

On Tuesday the GPHC received a donation of forty computers to assist in the collection and storage of Emergency Medical Records (EMR).

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital Robbie Rambarran who is performing the duties of CEO sees the donation as a timely one which has long been needed.

“The introduction of EMR throughout the health care sector and more specifically at the GPHC continues to be a top priority,” Rambarran noted.

He continued… “We are grateful for the technical support and expertise that PAHO has continued to provide to the GPHC for the advancement of service and provision of quality health care to the people of Guyana,” he concluded.

The Georgetown Public Hospital continues to care for approximately 10,000 maternal patients yearly and the digitization of patients information will be of a great assistance the gathering was told this morning.

Consultant in Maternal Mortality Reduction attached to PAHO/WHO, Dr. Padmini Singh, explained that the donation is a push for the implementation of an electronic system for perinatal information (the period when you become pregnant and up to a year after giving birth).

This system, Dr. Singh noted, is not new as it has been in place since 2008 but expressed the belief that the records need to be digitized.

“We are trying to transition from the paper–based format into an electronic format,” she said.

Dr. Singh highlighted that this strategy will be paramount in reducing maternal mortality in Guyana.

“[This is] improving data that is available to us so that there is better continuity of patient care,” she said.
