February 5 2025— Police say no foul play is suspected in the deaths of four crew members who collapsed aboard a cargo vessel docked at Cummingsburg on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
Further enquiries revealed that at about 18:00 hrs, the crew reportedly entered the engine room in the lower section of the vessel to conduct an inspection, during which they may have been exposed to suspected noxious fumes.
The deceased have been identified as Brandon Deonarine, 18, a seaman of Support, East Bank Demerara; Nerwaine Persaud, 57, a boat captain of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara; Dominic Alexis, 33, a seaman of De Kendren, West Coast Demerara; and Getindra Sanchara, 25, an engineer of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
Investigators stated that Brandon Deonarine and Nerwaine Persaud were the first to enter the engine room, where they reportedly collapsed. Dominic Alexis later entered in an effort to assist but also collapsed. Getindra Sanchara subsequently entered the space to render further aid and likewise collapsed.
Emergency Medical Technicians and the Guyana Fire Service responded to the scene and removed the men from the vessel. They were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they were pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
The scene was processed; however, the engine room was not examined at the time, pending safety clearance. Police noted that no marks of violence were observed on the exposed parts of the bodies.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing as authorities work to confirm the exact cause of death.
