Gavin Assanah, who was found unanimously guilty on two counts of child rape last month, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall.
He engaged in sexual penetration with the girl on January 26, 2014, and then again between August 1 and 31, 2014. The offence was committed in the county of Demerara.
On the first count, Assanah was jailed for 16 years, and on the second count, he was jailed for 17 years. The presiding Judge ordered that the two sentences be served concurrently.
According to the prosecution’s facts, Assanah raped the girl on two occasions while she was just 12. He was a close friend of the girl’s mother.
Throughout his trial, Assanah was represented by defence counsel Euclin Gomes while State Counsel Cicelia Corbin was the prosecutor.
