GRA Seizes Over 240 Ounces of Gold at Cheddi Jagan International Airport
Customs Officers of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) seized a substantial quantity of gold jewelry from three passengers at Cheddi Jagan International Airport today.
Two of the passengers were US citizens attempting to board an outbound American Airlines flight to New York, USA.
According to a statement from GRA, the operation supported by officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), the operation uncovered approximately 240 ounces of nearly pure gold disguised as silver-plated jewelry.
The gold, valued at over $560,000 USD, was being transported without the necessary permits and declarations to Customs officials.
The passengers were arrested, taken into custody, and handed over to the Guyana Police Force. Investigations are ongoing to determine if they are part of a larger gold smuggling ring.
Charges under the Customs and Anti-Money Laundering Acts are anticipated, with relevant authorities in Guyana and overseas being informed of the investigation’s findings.
The GRA has noted an alarming trend in smuggling attempts involving gold, monetary instruments, arms, and narcotics through Guyana’s ports. The Authority cautions against such illegal activities, warning that violators will face severe consequences.
