26-year-old Kevin Mohan, was on Thursday, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his aunt, Anita Mohan who died on September 4, 2016. A 12-member jury earlier this month found Mohan called ‘Chuckie” guilty of the crime following a trial before Justice Sandil Kissoon.

Anita Mohan, called ‘Sandra’, 48, a vendor was found lying in a pool of blood on the lower flat of her home located at Lot 315 Cummings Lodge. It was reported that she was struck to the head with a rolling pin and stabbed.  She was robbed of her jewellery, monies entrusted to her by others, and other valuables.

The woman’s cause of death was given as cerebral hemorrhage

During a sentencing hearing on Thursday, Mohan maintained his innocence. In fact, he told the Judge, “I getting jail for something me did not do. I didn’t get a fair trial. Only Allah could Judge me; father knows the truth. I suffering bad in jail for something me did not do.

“Your actions speak to a calculated planned criminal act to kill and to rob Anita Mohan. Your cruelty to one who considered and treated you as a son will attract no mercy from this Court,” Justice Kissoon told the convicted killer during his sentencing remarks while describing the woman’s killing as “brutal”.

Throughout his trial, Mohan was represented by Attorney-at-law Damien Da Silva, while the case for the State was presented by Prosecutors Lisa Cave and Muntaz Ali. This was Kevin Mohan’s second trial for the murder; his first trial ended in a hung jury.
