BREAKING: 6 students hospitalised as drug-use in school ‘gets out of hand’

Multiple sources have confirmed that six female students from a School in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) have been rushed for medical attention after reportedly lacing their own beverage with ecstasy.

The BIG Smith News Watch has confirmed that the incident occurred on Friday (May 13, 2022). Reports are that after lacing their beverages, the female students all became ill and were rushed for medical attention.

One person familiar with the situation told the Big Smith News Watch that the use of illicit drugs at the West Demerara Secondary and other schools has gotten out of control over the years and seems to be on the rise.

“Parents are at home and don’t know half of what is going on and we the teachers have been battling to keep these practices out of school. The ministry would even send in people from time to time but that is not helping” one senior mistress told BIG Smith News Watch on Friday.

Efforts to reach senior education officials on the situation have been unsuccessful.

Recently, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) partnered with the Ministry of Education to weed out the use of illegal drugs in schools. Head of CANU James Singh told reporters in early April that ranks have identified several new types of drugs that are now prevalent in society and efforts are being made to get them off the streets. This he said will include working with teachers and students in schools.
