Anil & Eusi clash over Mahdia Fire Compensation lawsuit

February 21, 2025

Attorney General Anil Nandlall and Attorney Eusi Anderson are at it over a 900 million Dollars lawsuit Anderson filed against the state on behalf of his client Valerie Carter who lost her twin daughters in the 2023 Mahdia School Dorm Fire in Region 8.

On Wednesday, Anderson’s law Firm issued a statement announcing the action which also sought to challenge the initial 5 million dollars government compensation to parents, gardens, and next of kin for each child killed in the fire.

In his statement, Anderson’s Chambers noted that Carter had made an application to the court for it to set aside the previous agreement she signed accepting 5 million each for the death of her two children. Based on that statement, Justice Niles granted a judgment that cleared the way for setting aside the initial agreement.

On Thursday, February 21, 2025, Attorney General Nandlall issued a statement debunking several points made by Anderson in his statement which was released on Wednesday, February 20, 2025.

Nandlall said his office applied to strike out the case on the ground that it disclosed no reasonable ground for bringing the claim, which represented vexation, an abuse of the court, and scandal.

According to the AG, Anderson presumably recognized that the application was hopeless and likely to fail, withdrew, and discontinued the case against the state. Nandlall said to ‘our utter shock’ Anderson issued a statement stating that Justice Niles granted him a judgment against the state.

“To our utter shock, Mr. Anderson published in the said press release that Justice Niles granted him a judgment on 13th January 2025, intentionally conveying the clear but misleading impression to the unsuspecting reader that he has obtained Judgment against the State.” Nandlall’s statement noted.

Firing back at the Attorney General late Thursday night, February 20, 2025, Attorney at Law Eusi Anderson referencing that his client told him that the Attorney General himself presented a lawyer to her who he said would advise her before executing the agreement and alleges that his client informed him that she never met the lawyer prior nor did she pay that lawyer who the AG introduced her to.

He said that on August 30, 2024, Shoshanna Lall, the Solicitor General wrote him in agreement that the reliefs he sought on behalf of Ms. Carter could be granted by the state treating the 5 million compensation as repudiated and requested that if he wanted that by some condition he was applying to the whole process, he would need to withdraw the initial action which he refused to do.

“Justice Niles disallowed her (Solicitor General) application for costs. He permitted me to withdraw the claim in his action without prejudice to any subsequent claims including the new GYD$900m claims contrary to what Ms. Lall wanted. His Court Order says so. All of these are recorded on Court systems so before the web of misinformation is spun please note that I am prepared to release the transcript as well as the voice recordings” Eusi Anderson stated in his response.
