Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Suzan Rodrigues walks with the contractor and technical staff

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Suzan Rodrigues recently returned to the community of Goed Fortuin where she made good on promises made back in December.

During a revisit to the community, residents were told that they will by the end of June of this year, receive treated potable water, something they have been crying out for over the years.

The Ministry of Housing and Water through Guyana Water Inc. will be tapping into the production of a water treatment plant three villages away in order to make the delivery of treated water a reality.

Additionally, a contract will commence on Tuesday for the construction of eight reinforced concrete drains and walkways throughout the community. These will be done at a cost of close to eight million dollars.

In December the residents complained to the minister who was there on a walkabout, about the poor quality of the water supply in their community, their inability to consume and use it for domestic purposes and the headache for residents especially the elderly and school children to move between different parts of the community because of the state of several dams.

We were told that many times, students would have to return home because of slipping and falling along the dams while trying to head to school because of muddy and impassable state of the dams

Minister Rodrigues inspects the pump room of the water treatment plant which would supply Goed Fortuin with treated water

“I was here in December and we had a number of issues and we walked the Squatting Area. One of the things I needed to address immediately and a matter of priority is the quality of the water and this was happening for a long time and I said we will conduct a feasibility study to say if you could get water for Pouderoyen water treatment plan and we have completed that study which found that you can” Minister Rodrigues told the residents.

The minister called on the residents to report any leaks in the system since that too will have a bearing on the pressure of what they received. Over the next few weeks, the interconnectivity process between the community and the treatment plan will commence.

The reinforcement concrete drains and walkway would be done by Ivor Allyn Contracting service and would see some 350 meters or thereabout, of walkways and drains.
