A Police constable attached to the Tactical Service Unit (TSU) was today charged with causing the death of an elderly woman following an accident. Constable Stephan Ramsay appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Providence Magistrates’ Courts.

Ramsay pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on January 5, 2021, at Nandy Park Public Road, East Bank Demerara in the vicinity of Shaheed Supermarket, he drove a minibus owned by Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of 59-year-old Dulmattie Boodlall of Block Y Section C Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.

The Constable was released on $600,000 bail and instructed to make his next court appearance on February 19.  Inquiries disclosed that at the time the three-lane was activated, the minibus was proceeding north along the western side of the eastern carriageway.

The driver alleged that as he was approaching the pedestrian crossing when he suddenly saw the pedestrian crossing the road from West to East on the pedestrian crossing. As such, he swerved east to avoid a collision but because of the short distance, the minibus collided with the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was picked up by Ramsay in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where was pronounced dead on arrival.
