Back in July, BIG Smith News Watch reported on a fire that flatten the home of a Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara family which rendered them homeless.
Through the kind and practical assistance of residents, both local and overseas, the Mon Repos family whose house was completely gutted by fire last July now has a new roof over their heads.
Persons started pledging their contributions after present Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall posted photos of the fire on his social media pages. “As a result, numerous persons, both in and out of Guyana, made contact with me offering their kind assistance to help in rebuilding a house for the family,” he said.
“Through the kind compliments of a contractor in Lusignan, we began the task. It is near completion. Yesterday, I visited the family now in occupation of their new home,” Nandlall added.
The generous contributions reportedly came from Panko Steel Construction, National Hardware Limited, Brassonic Limited, Bissan’s Trading, Queensway Security Services, SleepIn Group of Hotels, Readymix Concrete Limited, Delta Security, and many more.
Deopaul Omrow, the owner of the home, was in shock on the day of the fire. Though he did not know exactly how it started, he said the fire had to have started from an electrical point that was on the outside of the house.

Legal Affairs Minister Nandlall meets with the displaced family after the fire in July

According to him, he was in the upper flat of the building when his son, who resided in the bottom flat, alerted him of the fire. The two then exited the building and neighbours, along with the family members, formed a bucket brigade in an effort to put out the blaze.
But by this time, the blaze had already become uncontrollable and as such, he was unable to save any of the items of his home.
The elderly man said that he, along with his three adult children, one of whom is working on the river, all resided at the home and lost all of their belongings.
The family had said that they would welcome any assistance that members of the public would offer them during that difficult time and had provided contact details.
