Cremation postponed in suspicious death of Schoonard artist

The cremation of internationally respected Guyanese watercolour artist Jorge Bowenfield has been temporarily postponed as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Bowenfield, 90, was found dead earlier this month inside his Lot 472 Schoonard, West Bank Demerara home after relatives reportedly became concerned when they were unable to reach him and sent someone to check on him.

His body was reportedly discovered on the floor of the residence. The property was found locked, while the apartment was reportedly in disarray, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

A post-mortem examination reportedly found injuries to the back of Bowenfield’s head. It remains unclear whether the injuries were inflicted or resulted from a fall.

The residence contained several of Bowenfield’s paintings, although it has not been established whether any valuables or artwork were missing.

The decision to temporarily halt the cremation is expected to allow for further examination of the circumstances surrounding the elderly artist’s death.

Bowenfield, who lived in England for several years, eventually returned to Guyana. He was widely respected for his watercolour work and his contribution to the local and international art community.
