The identity of the elderly woman whose decomposed body was discovered in a canal at Victoria Koker, East Coast Demerara, has been confirmed as 73-year-old Carlyn Greaves of North Street, Sparendaam.

Greaves’ body was found on Tuesday afternoon after reports of a body floating in the canal near the koker, located south of the seawall.

According to relatives, the woman was previously reported missing.

The area, which is currently not in operation, lies in close proximity to a pump station.

At the time of discovery, the body was in an advanced state of decomposition and was found face down in the water.

She was clad in a pair of grey short pants and no top. Investigators had initially noted a heart-shaped tattoo on the right thigh, along with marks consistent with fish bites on the left shoulder.

The remains were removed from the canal and taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, before being transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.

Authorities are continuing efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
