George Moses of Lot 18 Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown, has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for the April 10, 2023 murder of Anthony Williams.

The sentence was handed down following a hearing before Justice Gino Persaud at the High Court in Georgetown.

Moses appeared before the judge and expressed remorse to the victim’s family, apologising for the events that led to Williams’ death.

He told the court that he did not expect the now deceased to confront him and that the situation escalated unexpectedly.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Persaud  said the starting point for the offence of murder was 30 years’ imprisonment.

The court, however, identified several aggravating factors, including that the offence was committed in the presence of children, the use of a knife, and Moses’ persistence in pursuing Williams after he ran down the stairs in an attempt to escape.

The judge further noted that Moses continued the attack despite opportunities to stop, describing his conduct as demonstrating a violent nature and deeming him a danger to society.

As a result, three years were added to the starting point, increasing the sentence to 33 years.

The court then considered Moses’ apology and deducted three years, returning the sentence to 30 years.

However, Justice Pasad noted that the court did not find the apology to be genuinely remorseful.

Moses was granted a further reduction of 10 years due to his early guilty plea, resulting in a final sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment.

The court also ordered that the time Moses spent  — amounting to two years and six months — be deducted from the sentence.

This leaves Moses with 17 years and six months remaining to be served in prison.

Moses was charged in relation to the April 10, 20, 2023, stabbing death of Anthony Williams at their shared residence on Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty.

The court previously heard that the two men, who occupied separate flats in the building, had an ongoing dispute which frequently resulted in violent confrontations.
