GRA Backs Off in Bid to Seize Mohamed’s Luxury Rides

April 5 2025– Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) agents swooped down at the home of businessman Azruddin Mohamed on Saturday morning to seize a number of luxury vehicles which the businessman imported into the country over a period of time.

However, their efforts to seize the vehicles failed as several persons sympathetic to the businessman and his family showed up and prevented the GRA from executing its operation.

The standoff unfolded at the Houston residence of Azruddin Mohamed and his father Nazar Mohamed, where officers from the Guyana Revenue Authority’s Customs Enforcement Unit attempted to carry out the seizure.

The operation triggered swift resistance, as hundreds of supporters arrived at the scene in protest, blocking access to the property.

The protestors, who claimed no political affiliation or financial incentive, accused the GRA’s actions of being politically motivated.

The crowd refused to disperse, forcing the GRA agents to withdraw without completing their mission.

The businessman, who has since directed all communication through legal channels, questioned the motives and timing behind the enforcement.

He pointed out that the vehicles in question entered the country several years ago and stated that the matter is already before the court, making the attempted seizure even more contentious.

Further complicating the issue, Mohamed alleged political pressure, claiming he had been approached by senior government officials and asked to publicly withdraw from any presidential ambitions.

He stated that failure to comply would result in repercussions, including asset seizures. He has pledged to provide evidence that the vehicles were pre-approved prior to importation.

The failed operation has now sparked widespread public debate, as many supporters view the businessman as a long-time benefactor to underprivileged communities. His supporters, standing firm outside his residence, cited years of charitable work and community outreach as their motivation to defend him against what they perceive as politically charged actions.
