Trial Begins for Two Accused in Murder of Market Vendor

January 27 2025- The trial of two men accused of the 2018 murder of Bourda Market vendor Troy Ramalho
commenced this week at the Demerara High Court.

Akeem Morris, 32, a miner from Sandy Bob Street, Kitty, Georgetown, and Roy Sandiford, 39, of
Section “A” Sophia, Georgetown, appeared before Justice Navindra Singh and a jury.

Both pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the fatal shooting of Ramalho during an
alleged robbery.

Prosecutors Muntaz Ali and Christopher Belfield outlined their case, alleging that the two men
were part of a three-man gang that ambushed Ramalho on August 15, 2018, near Bourda
Market, Georgetown.

The incident reportedly took place around 11:00 p.m. as Ramalho, well-known for selling
cheese and eggs outside “Rambarran’s” on Robb Street, resisted an armed robbery.

During the confrontation, Ramalho was shot, sustaining fatal injuries. Despite the efforts of
bystanders who rushed to his aid, the 45-year-old vendor succumbed to his injuries.

Morris is represented by attorney Kiswana Jefford, while attorney Dexter Todd is acting as
Sandiford’s defence counsel.
